I think that if I was in this situation I would fight to give the people more warning. As some other students pointed out, one week isn’t enough notice for a lay off situation in my opinion, so I would point this out to the company and work with them to give people more notice. However, if the company would not give the employees more notice, I would definately tell my family members so they could have more time to look for a new job. In situations like these though, I would hope that any company would have the ethics to give loyal employees a fair amount of time before laying them off.
If I was interviewing a candidate who told me a story like this, I would probably want to hire them more. Having the courage to stand up and suggest something in order to protect the company employees and give them a fair chance to find a new job is important, because it creates company loyalty.
If that were to happen (but i find it highly unlikely), I would tell the CEO that I did what I believe to be ethical treatment of our loyal employees. If the CEO were to fire me for a decision like this, then this probably isn’t a company I want to work for anyways.
i completely agree with you and it seems like we have similar moral ethics. i would never want to lose the trust of my family and if the company did not respect my decision they most likely are not the right company for me. its good to see we have similar views on this issue.
